Henry shortly after his rescue and Henry today
In 2000, Equine Advocates rescued twelve mules. Seven of them were purchased at the big weekly slaughter auction in New Holland,
Pennsylvania in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. There were 500 mules for sale that day. Most were either sold for
slaughter or purchased for work. The other five Molly Mules came from an Amish dispersal sale, also in Lancaster County, PA. One
of the most abused equines we ever rescued was a mule named Henry. He was being beaten in the sales ring because he was not
cooperating. When EA president, Susan Wagner, brought him to safety, she found that his halter had been put on so tightly that it
had become embedded in his skull and had to be cut off. Henry still has issues but has shown vast improvement over the years and
seems to love his life at Safe Home.
