Suzie, Lily & Terry were all born in the US to rescued Canadian PMU mares. They get to socialize with
their moms at Safe Home on a regular basis.
By far our largest multi-horse rescue took place over six months from the fall of 2003 through the spring of 2004. Equine
Advocates traveled to Manitoba to rescue 46 PMU mares from a PMU factory farm that was closing its doors. Most of the mares were
pregnant. "Some of the mental scars were as severe as the physical ones," said EA President, Susan Wagner. "With
some of these mares, it has literally taken years to be able to establish trust and handle them. Some came around quickly, others
took over a year to several years and two are still difficult, although they are finally starting to come around." Many of
the mares were adopted to sanctuaries and private homes. However, some of them are permanent residents at Safe Home and are able
to socialize with their last offspring at the sanctuary.
