Banner, one of the loveliest horses ever at the sanctuary, sadly passed away on August 9, 2014 at the age of 29.

Banner, formerly Bloodstock, had been foaled on May 9, 1985 in Kentucky and raced 71 times. Although he was not a major stakes winner, his bloodlines were impressive as he was from Graustark's last crop. After his racing career was over, he was used as a cheap stallion until the the age of seventeen. He was in Ohio and was two days away from going to the slaughterhouse when we heard his story and rescued him by purchasing him before he was sold to a killer buyer which had already been arranged. That was in 2002. We immediately sent him to Ohio State University Hospital to be gelded.

Banner was one of the most elegant and kindest equines we have ever known. The old expression about class - "you know it when you see it" - That was Banner through and through. He personified class. He lived a very happy life with his two buddies, Harry, 22 and Freddie, 23, in the section of the sanctuary we call "The Grumpy Old Men."

Banner will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
