Resident Equine Care Manager

Job opportunity for horse professional with at least 5 years experience in equine management needed to care for the 80+ rescued horses, ponies, donkeys & mules at our 140-acre sanctuary in Chatham, NY. Supervise the Assistant Equine Care Manager, the Barn Manager & the volunteers and work closely with the other staff members.

Ability to utilize kind, humane and progressive handling techniques for these horses, most of whom were rescued from slaughter, abuse and neglect.  Recognize and treat basic health problems, work closely with veterinarians, administer medical treatments, give injections, apply eye medications and bandages. Daily up close evaluation of all animals to ensure their well being. Knowledge of equine nutrition – maintain and update the feed chart as needed.  Schedule and hold for the farriers, schedule annual dental, shots & worming, assist with feed/mashes & hay distribution. Bring horses up to the barn for the vet, farrier and for grooming. Order supplies, medications, feed and bedding.

Provide a daily report detailing all activity, observations, medications of equines, volunteers that day, and any other important information. Daily communication with President as to the health or other issues with the horses.

Participate with school and other group visits, day camp attendees, as it pertains to the horses and horse care giving grooming sessions, demonstrations, talks, etc.

Ability to drive a horse trailer a plus.
