Sheena, a white Percheron, is a former work horse. Born in the late ‘90’s, she was forced to work past the age of twenty during which time she sustained several permanent injuries. We heard about her situation and came to her rescue to prevent her from ending up at auction. Although Sheena was not turned out regularly with other horses before, she surely has adapted well to sanctuary life and being in the company of other mares since arriving at Equine Advocates.
Sheena is proudly Sponsored, In Full, by a supporter from Charlottesville, Virginia, who also generously sponsors Jack!

Sophia, a Belgian Draft born around 1995, is a Canadian PMU mare who we brought to the United States in 2004. Destined for certain slaughter, Sophia was in foal at the time of her rescue. She gave birth to a filly named Terry, who also lives at the sanctuary. Sophia spends her days with her best friend, Annie and several other PMU mares and offspring of rescued PMU mares in "The Big and the Beautiful" pasture. Photo credit: Valerie Quint

Spirit, an American Saddlebred gelding, was born in 2000 to a mare who was rescued, along with 10 other Saddlebreds in 1999 by Equine Advocates. It was one of the most written about animal abuse cases involving horses during that time. We raised the money to go to court and purchase the horses at a bankruptcy hearing. Spirit's dam (mother), Sienna along with all of the horses were adopted out, but Spirit came back to us. Spirit spends his days with his best friends, Kip and Bandit in an area of the sanctuary we call "Goodfellas."

Suzie, a Percheron/Appaloosa cross, was born on April 25, 2004 to Bernadette, who was in foal at the time of her rescue from a Canadian PMU factory farm. As a foal, Suzie was black but has turned white like her mom as she has grown up. Suzie is a very lovable, friendly and mischievous mare who loves to play with her pasture-mates, Terry, born the same year and Lily, born on the same day. All of their dams are here at the sanctuary too!

Terry, a Belgian Draft born in 2004, is the daughter of former PMU mare, Sophia, who was in foal at the time of her rescue and who also resides at the sanctuary. Terry will never have to know the horrors that her mother experienced. Both had been adopted in 2004 but came back to us. Terry spends her days with PMU offspring Lily and Suzie in the area of the sanctuary we call "Girls Just Want To Have Fun." Photo credit: Holly Scism

Tim, formally Timothy Murphy, is a bay Thoroughbred gelding born on April 14, 1999. He is a grandson of 1977 Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew. After his racing career was over, he was retrained and sent to join a State University Equine Studies Program. He and two other Thoroughbred geldings were consigned by the school to be sold at auction because they outlived their usefulness. Equine Advocates found out about their story and purchased them privately from the school on December 5, 2010. Photo credit: Jeffrey Anderson

Tina, a mixed breed born in June of 2013, had a rough start. Her mother passed away while giving birth to her. As a result, Tina did not receive the vitally important colostrum through her mother's milk within the first 72 hours of being born to help build her immune system. This resulted in her being much smaller than she should be. She was rescued by a great friend of the organization who learned, through her own veterinarian, that Tina is also half-blind. She is not a horse eligible for adoption, so we took her into our sanctuary program. She is beyond adorable and we are so pleased to have her here. Zack is a Belgian Draft Horse who was seized during a cruelty raid by police in upstate New York in 2017. Since that time, he had been placed in two homes that did not work out. Equine Advocates was contacted by one of the investigators who was on the scene at the time he was seized and asked us to take him in an emergency which we did. After being thoroughly examined and tested at Cornell, he was diagnosed with several health conditions that will need to be managed and carefully monitored for the rest of his life. Zack arrived at the sanctuary on July 14, 2018. His estimated birth year is 2000. He is now the largest equine at the sanctuary weighing in at 1900 pounds. Zack is a sweet-tempered and beautiful horse who clearly belongs in a sanctuary. We were happy to be able to provide Zack with a forever home here at Equine Advocates, where he shares a pasture with our darling Ceci.

Zoe, a Percheron/Paint cross born on April 3, 2002, is the offspring of Dolly, a Percheron herself. Dolly was pregnant with Zoe at the time of her rescue from an Amish farm in Ohio. Zoe spends her days up at the main barn alongside her best pal Elinore. Stop by and say hello!
