Lorna, a bay Thoroughbred mare, was born on May 26, 2001 in New York State and raced under the name “Speedy Witch.” We named her “Lorna,” in honor of one of our most loyal supporters and dearest friends, Lorna Finalyson, who passed away in 2016. You wouldn’t know by looking at this mare that she was terribly betrayed twice in her life and each time, nearly died. First, she was brought to the point of emaciation by her original owner when his operation was finally raided in 2009 and she was placed in a home by a local humane society. Fast forward to 2016, we received a call from Mindy Lovell of the Canadian-based group, “Transitions Thoroughbreds,” that a mare who originally was bred by the same abusive owner as three of our rescued horses, Mikey, Arnold and D.A., was discovered in a kill pen at the New Holland Slaughter Auction in PA. Mindy raised the funds to purchase her from the killer buyer and paid for her to be in quarantine for a month before being transported to New York. After enduring years of abuse and neglect, Lorna is finally in a safe home here, alongside her pal Beau in the field called “Lovers Lane.”
