Maxine, a Cleveland Bay, had been used as a PMU mare (pregnant mare urine) when she was rescued by Equine Advocates at the Canadian Winnipeg Slaughter Auction in 2000.  Maxine was being britalized and beaten in the sales ring, which is one of the reasons we rescued her. It took a long time for her to get over her past abuse, but she seems to love her life here at the sanctuary.  It is estimated that Maxine was born around 1995. Over the years, Maxine developed heaves which is a chronic respiratory condition caused by allergies for which she is treated regularly. She also has soundness issues and periodically receives joint injections in her hip. Photo credit:  Caroline Christie
