Take Action Now: Urge New York Governor to Pass Anti-Slaughter Law

Please Take Action Now!

Ending the slaughter of America’s horses could finally become a reality, but there is still much work to be done.

A message from President/Founder Susan Wagner:

Dear Friends,

I am writing to ask all of you for your activism and participation in getting involved to end horse slaughter in America – and I mean every form of horse slaughter! Things are starting to happen, but we are not there yet. We need a large wave of public support to get this done.

First, let’s start with New York State because what happens there can have an impact on the federal bill known as the SAFE Act that has been introduced as an amendment to the 2023 Farm Bill (expected to pass this fall).

This past June, both chambers of the New York State legislature made history by passing bills banning the slaughter of equines in, through, and from New York State for both human and animal consumption. Read all about it here.

We are awaiting NY Governor Kathy Hochul to sign this bill into law and we are urging her to do it now because we strongly believe what New York does could have a strong impact on the federal legislation now in committee.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

We are asking New York residents and those in other states with family and friends in New York to ask them to please call, email, and/or write to New York Governor Kathy Hochul and urge her to please sign A5109/S2163 now. The governor has until December to sign it, but America needs her to make history and sign it now! It is the best and most effective anti-horse slaughter legislation ever passed because it prohibits the slaughter of horses for both human and animal consumption.

Time is of the essence, not just to end horse slaughter in New York which is a border state into Canada through which two of the four Canadian horse slaughterhouses are most easily accessed, but also because right now the federal bill known as the SAFE Act is being considered in committee, but it does not protect horses fully in the same way that the New York bill does.

  • Contact Governor Hochul by Phone: 1-518-474-8390 | Office hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm
  • Contact Governor Hochul by Email: https://www.governor.ny.gov/content/governor-contact-form
  • Contact Governor Hochul by Mail:

The Honorable Kathy Hochul

Governor of New York State

NYS State Capitol Building

Albany, NY 12224

Next – We need to amend and support the SAFE Act (H.R. 3475/S.2037) – Unlike the New York State bill, the federal bill known as the SAFE Act only prohibits the slaughter of horses for human consumption. We want to see the SAFE Act pass, but we want it to be amended to prohibit the slaughter of horses for animal consumption as well, so horse slaughter is banned entirely in the United States once and for all!

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  • Contact U.S. House Committee Members Now
Find the members of the House Agriculture Committee here. If any of the members represent your district, please contact your representative by clicking on his or her image and calling their Washington, D.C. office or a district office. Ask your rep to please amend and pass H.R. 3475 – The SAFE Act to prohibit the slaughter of horses for animal consumption as well as for human consumption.

  • Contact U.S. Senate Committee Members Now
Find the members of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee here. If any of the Senators represent your state, please contact them by clicking on his or her image and calling their Washington, D.C. office or a district office. Ask your Senator to please amend and pass S.2037 – The SAFE Act to prohibit the slaughter of horses for animal consumption as well as for human consumption.

These are truly exciting times! After more than 33 years of failed attempts to end horse slaughter in America, we are finally at the point where it could happen. But to be successful, we need everyone who cares about ending this unspeakable and un-American practice to become proactive and let our lawmakers know that the time is NOW to ban horse slaughter entirely.

Let’s get busy!

Sincerely,

Susan, President & Founder
