Camp Horses/Horses for Hire

What You Can Do

Ask camp owners and dude ranch operators where their horses go at the end of the season. If they can’t tell you, the answer is simple — look elsewhere. Do the research and ask questions! Ask if the camp is American Camping Association accredited. If so, that means they follow set standards to maintain the barn and its inhabitants including safety for horses and campers. However, this doesn’t 100% ensure they do not go to auction when the season is over.

The best and most reputable camps are the ones that keep their equines all year long and retire them when they can no longer work.

Nemo, a Quarter Horse born in 2001, worked for twelve years under cruel conditions as a camp horse at a now-defunct upstate New York dude ranch.
