As the livelihood of America’s horses continues to be threatened, it’s important to continue bringing awareness to the issues that affect these precious animals and advocate for them. Commemorative days are one way to do just that. In June, the United Nations declared July 11th World Horse Day! In their words, “Few animals have contributed to human progress as profoundly – and quietly – as the horse.”
The United Nations adds, “World Horse Day is more than a celebration – it’s a call to protect one of humanity’s oldest partnerships, which still helps feed us, support our economies, and lift our spirits.” Click here to read more about the resolution, which will be recognized for the first time this year.
Here in New York, the timing of this day of celebration and call for protection is significant. July 11th falls during the opening weekend of the Saratoga Race Course summer meet. Tens of thousands of spectators will watch and place bets as horses sprint in hot weather, all in the name of entertainment.
This makes us reflect on all the former racehorses we’ve rescued over the years, including the 20 rescued/retired Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds currently residing at our sanctuary. For all they’ve done for us in the name of sports entertainment and financial gain, they deserve respect and safe, comfortable retirement homes when their careers end. Let’s protect all horses!
We believe that horses deserve a life free of abuse and a dignified end to their lives. Your generous support helps the horses and other equines currently at our sanctuary and helps with our future rescue efforts. Thank you!
