Sponsor an Equine
Our residents at Equine Advocates Rescue & Sanctuary need constant care. Many are aged or have health problems because of the abuse and neglect they suffered before being rescued. Your sponsorship of one of our equine residents will help provide a happy life for the animal you choose. We have many sponsorship options available!

Amos
From: $50.00 / monthAmos, a Percheron Draft, served this country as a Military Working Horse for fourteen years with the Caisson Platoon, a unit of the United States Army. Because of his sheer size and strength, he almost exclusively served as a Wheel Horse who pulled the caisson, or wagon, carrying the caskets of fallen military members to their final resting places at Arlington National Cemetery. However, because Amos was also such a good riding horse, he occasionally would serve as a Section Horse in military funeral processions. Section Horses are ridden and not connected to the wagon and are positioned directly next to the Lead Horses.
During his years of service, Amos performed in many military funerals and other official ceremonies, including the funeral of General Colin Powell in 2021. The Caisson Platoon released Amos from service on November 1, 2023. He was first shipped to Cornell University Hospital for Animals where he underwent a health and wellness exam before coming to the sanctuary. Amos was born in 2004, but we do not know his exact date of birth. Consequently, we will celebrate his birthday every year on November 9th, the day he arrived at Equine Advocates. Amos is a handsome gray gelding with a kind and playful disposition. We are honored to provide this equine veteran with a well-deserved retirement where he will be cared for and doted on for the rest of his life.

Angie
From: $50.00 / monthAngie, a Draft Cross, was born on June 4, 2004 to former PMU mare Barbra, who Equine Advocates rescued that same year in Canada, along with 45 other slaughter-bound PMU mares. Angie was born in the U.S. She had been adopted out for several years but came back to us in August of 2011. She has her mom’s eyes and face, but not her color. Barbra was a large Belgian Draft who sadly passed away on April 22, 2017. Angie lives in a large pasture that we call “Glamour Girls” with other PMU offspring.

Annie
From: $50.00 / monthAnnie, born around 2001, is a Belgian Draft branded with #157 (the same as Peggy) and was the youngest of 46 Canadian PMU mares Equine Advocates rescued between October 2003 and March 2004. For that reason, she does not seem to have as many physical and emotional scars as most of the other mares rescued during that six-month period. She was adopted when she arrived and gave birth to a colt named Connor. Both horses came back to us in 2008. Annie spends her days with her friends in the area we call “Field of Dreams.”

Arnold
From: $50.00 / monthArnold is a registered Thoroughbred who was born on April 7, 2001 and once raced under the name “Cluster Bomb.” He was rescued, along with two other Thoroughbreds, Mikey and D.A., on January 16, 2007. Mikey sadly passed away on July 8, 2023. Arnold spent more than a month being treated for emaciation and severe skin disease at an equine hospital immediately following his rescue. Dr. Bill Barnes, who treated all three Thoroughbreds, told New York Times reporter Joe Drape, “They had no groceries. They were starving to death.” Arnold and D.A. all live together in a part of the sanctuary called “After the Finish Line.” They share their pasture with fellow retired racers, Monty and Joey.

Beau
From: $50.00 / monthBeau is an unregistered Thoroughbred born in 2003. He came to Equine Advocates in 2008, along with his sire, Clive, and another Thoroughbred, Marty, after their former owner was charged with animal cruelty and neglect. Sadly, Clive passed away in July 0f 2022. Beau is a chronic cribber, most likely due to his poor treatment and confinement by that owner. Cribbing is a neurotic behavior that involves a horse grasping a solid object, such as the stall door or fence rail, with his or her teeth, then arching their neck and contracting the lower neck muscles to retract the larynx. This behavior can lead to health problems if left unchecked. Because of this behavior, Beau now wears a cribbing collar. Despite his physical and emotional baggage, he is very happy at the sanctuary and very attached to his pasture mate, Lorna. The two reside together in a pasture named “Lovers Lane.”
Beau is proudly sponsored by supporters from Sacramento, California; Westfield, New Jersey; Ghent, New York; Hoosick Falls, New York and Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

Bebe
From: $50.00 / monthBebe, a gorgeous black mare, is the offspring of Scarlet, a PMU mare who was pregnant at the time Equine Advocates rescued her at a slaughter auction in Canada in 2000. Sadly, Scarlet passed away on October 10, 2014. Bebe was born in the U.S. on May 11, 2001, and was adopted soon afterward, but came back to us later that year. Bebe has since adapted very well to her life at the sanctuary and lives in the company of other PMU offspring in a huge pasture we call “Glamour Girls.”

Bridgette
From: $50.00 / monthBridgette, a Pinto Pony mare born around 2000, was rescued by Equine Advocates when an upstate New York animal park closed in 2006. The park auctioned off over 1,000 animals, of which approximately 800 went to animal dealers and hunting interests. There were 28 equines for sale and we were fortunate to be able to purchase seven of them, including this adorable little pony mare. Bridgette spends her days on “Pony Hill” with other miniature horses and miniature donkeys.

Casey
From: $50.00 / monthCasey, a Miniature Donkey, was born on April 30, 2007 here at the sanctuary. Casey’s dam, Pat, was pregnant with Casey at the time of her rescue from an upstate NY petting zoo. Sadly, Pat passed away on January 29, 2013. Casey is an absolute joy! He is best friends with two other donkeys named Reggie (from the same rescue as Casey’s dam) and Franklin, who came to the sanctuary in 2010. These three are inseparable and are affectionately known as “The Three Amigos.” You will find Casey on “Pony Hill” with his donkey friends and three miniature horses.

Ceci Divine
From: $50.00 / monthCeci Divine is a gorgeous registered Thoroughbred mare born on March 29, 2005 in Virginia. She raced under the name “Royal Citadel” 12 times but was not interested in being a racehorse. She clearly had been bred, but still ended up in a kill pen. Fortunately, Ceci was saved! She arrived at the sanctuary on May 31, 2018. She is a truly remarkable mare who seems to love her life here at the sanctuary in the company of her pasture mates Sylvia and Vicky in our “Girl Power” pasture.

Cindy
From: $50.00 / monthCindy, a mixed breed born around 1996, is a PMU mare from Canada who was rescued by Equine Advocates in 2003 and brought to the United States in 2004. She was part of a large rescue operation conducted by Equine Advocates where 46 PMU mares were saved from slaughter. Cindy is still a little standoffish, most likely due to never being handled or loved while being used as a PMU mare.

CJ
From: $50.00 / monthCJ is a registered Thoroughbred born on March 2, 2002. In 2003, he was purchased as a yearling at the Keeneland Sales for $100,000 due to his impressive breeding. His registered name is “Jay W” and he raced 18 times during his career. We have no idea where he went or how many times he changed hands after his racing days were over.
In July of 2021, we received a call that a 19-year-old Thoroughbred was about to be shipped from a Pennsylvania kill pen to a slaughterhouse in Mexico. We immediately offered to provide him a forever home at the sanctuary and renamed him “CJ.” After his rescue was expedited, he was shipped directly to a quarantine facility for 30 days. His condition was poor as he had been severely neglected and was extremely thin. During his time at the quarantine facility, he began to gain some weight. He completed his required stay there in late August and was transported to Cornell University Hospital for Animals in Ithaca, NY for a thorough medical examination and evaluation. CJ arrived at Equine Advocates Rescue & Sanctuary on September 3, 2021. He is a sweet-tempered and kind gelding who did not deserve the ultimate betrayal of being scrapped for slaughter. No horse does! He is now a member of our remarkable equine family, many of whom were also saved from the same horrendous fate.
CJ is proudly sponsored by supporters from Denver, Colorado; Montclair, New Jersey; Saratoga Springs, New York; Bushkill, Pennsylvania; East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and San Antonio, Texas.

D.A.
From: $50.00 / monthD.A., formerly “Pass the Pie,” is an unraced registered Thoroughbred gelding born on March 14, 2004. He was one of three emaciated Thoroughbreds rescued from a breeding farm in 2007 by Equine Advocates. All three horses were in such poor condition that they had to be treated at an equine hospital for more than 30 days. The story of their rescue was featured in an article by New York Times reporter Joe Drape in April of 2009. The article exposed wide-scale abuse and neglect. The breeder was later convicted and served time in jail. Today, D.A. is healthy and happily spends his days in the company of other rescued Thoroughbreds in a part of the sanctuary we call “After The Finish Line.”

Dallas
From: $50.00 / monthDallas, an Appaloosa born in 1989, was one of 27 Camp Horses and Ponies rescued by Equine Advocates at a bankrupt New York tourist attraction back in 1997. We went up against a known killer buyer who would have sold the animals for slaughter. Every year, thousands of Camp Horses end up at auction and often sold for slaughter at summer’s end. It is imperative that parents research riding camps before sending their children to one where the animals are leased for the season from dealers and killer buyers. There are good camps that keep their horses and retire them. One needs to take the time to find them.
Dallas had been adopted at the time, but came back to us in 2008. He spends his days up at the Main Barn or out in his field. Stop by and say hello!

From: $50.00 / monthDenny, formally “Major Deegan,” is a registered Thoroughbred born on February 4, 2002. When he could no longer race, he was admitted to a State University Equine Studies Program. He had sustained a broken coffin bone and had issues with his stifle, so he was about to be dumped at auction by the school when Equine Advocates rescued him, Tim, and another Thoroughbred named Monty on December 5, 2010. Every institute of learning that uses horses in its programs should teach responsible horse guardianship. Emma
From: $50.00 / monthEmma is a gray Standard Donkey born in 2020. She arrived here on August 18, 2022. As we do not have her exact date of birth, we have designated that day as her “Re-Birth-Day” and celebrate it every year. Our good friend Gerda Silver of Gerda’s Equine Rescue in Vermont rescued her out of the kill pens in Bastrop, Louisiana which are run by the notorious Stanley Brothers. They are responsible for sending thousands of equines to die in Mexican slaughterhouses every year and have been fined and brought up on charges numerous times for violating laws and committing crimes connected to their evil horse slaughter empire. The only way to shut them down once and for all is to ban the slaughter of all equines for any type of food – Period!
Because Gerda does not have a sanctuary, the equines she rescues from slaughter are put up for adoption when they have been rehabilitated. Emma has adapted beautifully to sanctuary life and now lives with Jake, another Standard Donkey, in our “Donkey Serenade” pasture. We are grateful to Gerda for saving this adorable donkey and are happy to provide her with a permanent and loving home.

Ginger
From: $50.00 / monthGinger is a chestnut Draft Cross mare whose estimated birth year is 2007. She had spent most of her adult life working as an Amish buggy horse and ultimately was dumped at a Pennsylvania slaughter auction when she could no longer perform. She was purchased by a commercial barn at that auction which saved her life. However, due to the soundness issues she developed over the years as a buggy horse, she was not a good candidate for riding and needed to be retired in a sanctuary. We heard about her situation and decided to help. After undergoing a complete medical evaluation at Cornell, Ginger arrived at Equine Advocates on October 16, 2023. She was diagnosed with several health problems, including severe pastern osteoarthrosis in her two front and right hind limbs and mild osteoarthritis in her left hind limb. Her Vitamin E level was way below the normal range which can be quite serious and predispose a horse to muscular weakness and dysfunction, as well as degenerative neurologic diseases. Ginger was immediately started on supplements at the hospital which we will continue to treat aggressively until her Vitamin E level is normal since no one knows how long she was living with this deficiency. Based on her medical evaluation, the good news is that with proper care, she can expect to live a good life turned out in a pasture with other horses. Ginger is a strikingly beautiful mare with an engaging personality. All of us at Equine Advocates are delighted that she has taken well to sanctuary life.

From: $50.00 / monthHayden, a Wild American Mustang, arrived at the sanctuary on October 1, 2013. Born in 2007, Hayden was captured during a brutal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) roundup in the Pryor Mountains of Montana when he was just two years old. He had been through two adoptions before he came to us. Hayden is a gorgeous equine with a rich history. His unique color is known as Coyote Dun. He has a long dorsal stripe that runs down the entire length of his back and he has black stripes on his legs. Henry
From: $50.00 / monthHenry, born around 1995, was a Work Mule and is one of the most abused equines ever rescued by Equine Advocates. In 1999, he was being auctioned off at New Holland Slaughter Auction in Pennsylvania, one of the worst and most notorious slaughter auctions in the country. Henry’s halter was on so tight that it had become embedded in his skull and had to be surgically removed. He was beaten in the sales ring and had whip slashes all over his face. We believe that sometimes Henry still remembers the abuse, but we also think that he now feels pretty safe here at the sanctuary. Henry spends his days in our “Comedy Central” pasture with other rescued Amish mules.

Jake
From: $50.00 / monthJake is a Standard Donkey whose estimated birth year is 2009. We heard about his situation from a concerned neighbor who had been trying to help him for a very long time. Jake had been locked in a stall for years with no access to turnout or other equines. His feet and teeth were also badly in need of attention. Jake’s owner finally agreed to give him up. He was immediately shipped to Cornell University Animal Hospital where he was thoroughly evaluated, treated, and gelded. He arrived at Equine Advocates on February 17, 2018. Equines that come here from cruel and unnatural circumstances like Jake do best in a sanctuary where they receive endless amounts of TLC and time to deal with their issues. On February 26, 2020, Janie arrived at Equine Advocates. She still has soundness issues, but outside of the fact that she was bred in New York State by AIOSA Farm, very little is known about her background or how she ended up being scrapped for slaughter when she was only eleven years old. We are so grateful to Gerda for coming to the rescue of this very sweet mare and saving her life.
