Support the Ejiao Act to Ban Cruel Donkey-Hide Trade

Every year, millions of donkeys worldwide suffer brutal deaths to produce ejiao, a gelatin made from their hides and used in cosmetics and traditional Chinese medicine. According to the Animal Welfare Institute, the United States is the third-largest importer of ejiao products.

We applaud Congressman Don Beyer for reintroducing the Ejiao Act to ban the transportation, sale, and purchase of ejiao products in the U.S.

“The trade and production of ejiao is an inhumane and dangerous business that is leading to the mass slaughter of donkeys and causing widespread harm to impoverished communities around the world,” said Representative Beyer. “More and more people in poorer countries are seeing animals upon which they depend stolen and killed to meet demand from the ejiao trade. Our bill would ensure the United States does not engage in the ejiao trade in any capacity and instead supports safer, more cost effective, and humane alternatives.”

Sadly, online retailers like Amazon continue to profit from this cruelty by selling ejiao products.

“It is extremely disappointing that big companies like Amazon and Etsy are continuing to sell products containing eliao despite being fully aware of the unspeakable cruelty involved and the strong opposition to the sale of these products in this country by a vast majority of Americans who support Congressman Beyer’s bill,” said Equine Advocates President Susan Wagner. “We are calling for a boycott of those companies until they cut off all ties with the ejioa trade.”

What you can do:

  1. Contact your representatives and urge them to support the Ejiao Act!
  2. Boycott Amazon and Etsy until they stop selling ejiao products.
  3. Check your cosmetics and avoid any products that contain ejiao.

We cannot be a part of this cruel trade any longer! Visit the Animal Welfare Institute’s website for more details about this bill and the ejiao trade.
