Philip Seymour, a malnourished and seriously injured Thoroughbred we rescued in early October, has made great progress since arriving at our sanctuary two weeks ago. You can learn more about his rescue here.

This handsome six-year-old Thoroughbred has been settling into his new home here. He’s also healing well from his skin graft surgery. In order to treat the large wound on his right front leg, the surgeon removed pieces of skin from his neck and transplanted them directly into the wound to promote skin growth. Take a look at these fascinating photos of his healing process below.

Equine Care Manager Melissa Murray has seen great progress during Philip’s frequent bandage changes. One of Philip’s veterinarians at Cornell University Hospital for Animals has said, “It (the wound) is closing up well at the bottom! It looks good!” We were also told that his healing is “moving in the right direction.”
Philip’s still on stall rest, but he gets daily hand walks inside our Main Barn to help him get exercise and maintain musculature as he gains weight and recovers. Melissa has noticed a significant weight increase in him, which is great considering how malnourished he was when rescued. We hope he’ll be cleared by his veterinarians for small paddock turnout very soon, weather conditions permitting.
You can help Philip! We would greatly appreciate it if you would make a tax-deductible donation toward Philip’s rescue, hospitalization, surgery, and lengthy recovery. Your generous support will help this young horse live a long, healthy, and happy life in the company of other horses here at his new permanent home.
When making a web donation, please select “In Honor Of” and write “Philip Seymour Fundraiser.” Thank you!
