Jeffrey Mac is a Draft Cross and PMU offspring born on May 1, 2004. He spent the first month of his life in a hospital and almost didn’t survive. Jeffrey’s dam is Fiona, who had also lived at the sanctuary, but sadly passed away in 2015.

  • Joey

    Joey

    From: $50.00 / month

Joey is a Registered Thoroughbred who raced under the name “Laila’s Jazz.” He was born on March 9, 2010. Joey raced until he was seven years old with lifetime earnings of more than $253,000. We first heard about Joey in mid-October 2019 from a friend of Equine Advocates who discovered him emaciated and suffering from severe neglect on a farm in Steuben County, NY.

As soon as we saw how weak and skeletal he was, we became involved immediately, as we knew how badly in need he was of medical attention. Joey was transported to Cornell University Hospital for Animals where he was described by his examining veterinarian as “a rack of bones” with a body condition score of “1” on the Henneke Scale. After nearly a week in the hospital, he arrived at Equine Advocates Rescue & Sanctuary on October 27, 2019. Joey is an extremely sweet-tempered gelding who was starved and made to suffer needlessly.

We were so happy to be able to offer him a loving and forever home here at the sanctuary. Joey resides in the section of the sanctuary we call “After the Finish Line.”

Joey is proudly sponsored by supporters from Salisbury, Connecticut; Beach Haven, New Jersey; Summit, New Jersey; Brooklyn, New York and Valatie, New York.

  • Kachina

    Kachina

    From: $50.00 / month

Kachina, a Wild American Mustang, arrived at the sanctuary on May 10, 2020. She was born in 2010 in the Pryor Mountains of Montana and is the daughter of Baja and Washakie, two of the most famous and beloved horses in that iconic herd. In 2012, when Kachina was two, she was bait-trapped and captured by the Bureau of Land Management. As is often the sad fate for so many wild horses who lose their families and freedom when captured, Kachina was shuffled from home to home, none of which were good situations. Ginger Kathrens, the founder and executive director of the Cloud Foundation, became aware of Kachina’s circumstances and expedited her rescue in October of 2019. Kachina was shipped to Colorado where she was fostered at the ranch of Dr. Lisa Jacobson, a renowned equine veterinarian. It was hoped that she could be adopted, but was soon determined that Kachina was not a good candidate as she did not like being ridden or trained. What she needed was to be retired in a sanctuary. When we heard her story, we offered her a forever home. Kachina is an extremely kind mare and took to sanctuary life as soon as she got here. She spends her day with Hayden, another Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang in the area we call “Born to be Wild.”

Kachina is proudly sponsored by supporters from Richmond, Massachusetts; Ghent, New York; Queensbury, New York; Schenectady, New York and Shelburne, Vermont, as well as by two corporate sponsors from Albany, New York, and one from Saratoga Springs, New York.

    King

    From: $50.00 / month

King is a stunning Black Percheron Draft born in 2002. He served this country for 16 years as a member of the U.S. Army’s Caisson Platoon at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery. As a “wheel horse,” King’s job was to help pull the caisson (or wagon) that carried the caskets of U.S. military members who passed away or died in combat designated to be buried with full military honors. Wheel horses are closest to the caisson wagon and always have a rider on their backs. In addition to his missions in funerals and military ceremonies, King was so calm and dependable that he was also used to help train the next generation of Caisson Horses. He was released to Equine Advocates for his permanent retirement on July 16, 2023.

King is proudly sponsored by supporters from East Greenbush, New York; Ghent, New York; Rensselaer, New York; Wynantskill, New York; Fort Myer, Virginia and Manassas, Virginia.

    Lorna

    From: $50.00 / month

Lorna, a Registered Thoroughbred Mare, was born on May 26, 2001, in New York State and raced under the name “Speedy Witch.” We named her Lorna in honor of one of our most loyal supporters and dearest friends, Lorna Finalyson, who passed away in 2016. You wouldn’t know by looking at this mare that she was terribly betrayed twice in her life and each time, she nearly died. First, she was brought to the point of emaciation by her original owner. When his operation was finally raided and closed down in 2009, she was placed in a home by a local humane society. Fast forward to 2016, we received a call from Mindy Lovell of the Canadian-based group Transitions Thoroughbreds that a mare who originally was bred by the same abusive owner as some of our rescued horses, Arnold and D.A., was discovered in a kill pen at the New Holland Slaughter Auction in Pennsylvania. Mindy raised the funds to purchase her from the killer buyer and paid for her to be in quarantine for a month before being transported to New York. After enduring years of abuse and neglect, Lorna arrived at our sanctuary on July 3, 2017, and is finally in a safe home.

Over the years, Lorna developed an upper respiratory obstruction issue that required surgery. In 2022, she successfully underwent a permanent tracheostomy. The stoma, or opening to her trachea that can be clearly seen, allows her to breathe much more easily now.

Lorna is proudly sponsored by supporters from New London, Connecticut; Acra, New York; Bellerose, New York and Rensselaer, New York.

He was ridden as a “Wheel Horse,” meaning he was one of the horses hitched closest to the funeral caisson or wagon which pulls the caskets of fallen military members to their final resting places at Arlington National Cemetery. • Mama Cass

    Mama Cass

    From: $50.00 / month

Mama Cass is a Belgian Draft Mare whose estimated birth year is 2003. She and a group of other horses had been seized by police in 2022 during a raid on a private farm in Vermont. These horses were reportedly part of a commercial riding business. Sadly, when the owner passed away from an illness, the horses were left in less capable hands, and their care was severely compromised. The authorities moved in when formal complaints were filed about the poor condition of those horses. Several local rescue groups in Vermont and Maine became involved and voluntarily took over responsibility for them. Mama Cass was placed in a temporary foster home where she received good treatment under the care of Dorset Equine Rescue, one of the rescue groups involved. We learned about Mama Cass’s story and her need for a permanent home while collaborating with that organization (and others) on a multi-horse rescue in Pennsylvania in January of 2023.

Mama Cass was shipped to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY to be examined and evaluated before coming to Equine Advocates. Radiographs revealed that she had arthritic changes in all four pasterns and in her front coffin joints which, according to her examining veterinarian, are not uncommon in Draft Horses. She was put on a series of six treatments of Adequan and daily medication to help manage her arthritis going forward. An equine dentist also treated her teeth while she was in the hospital. She otherwise was deemed to be in good health.

Mama Cass arrived at Equine Advocates on February 15, 2023. As is our custom, whenever we do not know a horse’s exact birthday, we will use a significant date such as the day of a rescue or arrival to the sanctuary as a way to mark and celebrate that animal’s “Re-Birth-Day.” So, February 15th it is! One of the wonderful things we quickly learned about Mama Cass after her arrival here was that her bright personality and curious nature were as enormous as her size!

Mama Cass is proudly sponsored by a supporter from Wynantskill, New York.
