    Jasmine

    From: $50.00 / month

Jasmine is a Cleveland Bay Mare born in 2004. She was part of a major 46 PMU (Pregnant Mares’ Urine) mare rescue that Equine Advocates conducted in Manitoba, Canada, between October 2003 and March 2004. The majority of foals born to PMU mares are considered byproducts, and many are sent to auction and/or slaughter. Jasmine was skin and bones when we rescued her and suffered from many signs of severe neglect. Her transformation has been dramatic. She is now healthy and thriving in her new life. She spends her days in the area of the sanctuary we call “Splendor in the Grass” with three other horses.

Jasmine is proudly sponsored by supporters from West Cornwall, Connecticut; Sheffield, Massachusetts; Chatham, New York and New York, New York.

    Joey

    From: $50.00 / month

Joey is a Registered Thoroughbred who raced under the name “Laila’s Jazz.” He was born on March 9, 2010. Joey raced until he was seven years old with lifetime earnings of more than $253,000. We first heard about Joey in mid-October 2019 from a friend of Equine Advocates who discovered him emaciated and suffering from severe neglect on a farm in Steuben County, NY.

As soon as we saw how weak and skeletal he was, we became involved immediately, as we knew how badly in need he was of medical attention. Joey was transported to Cornell University Hospital for Animals where he was described by his examining veterinarian as “a rack of bones” with a body condition score of “1” on the Henneke Scale. After nearly a week in the hospital, he arrived at Equine Advocates Rescue & Sanctuary on October 27, 2019. Joey is an extremely friendly gelding who was starved and made to suffer needlessly.

We were so happy to be able to offer him a loving and forever home here at the sanctuary. Joey resides in the section of the sanctuary we call “The Heartbreakers.”

Joey is proudly sponsored by supporters from Denver, Colorado; Salisbury, Connecticut; Beach Haven, New Jersey; Summit, New Jersey; Brooklyn, New York and Valatie, New York.

  • Kachina

    Kachina

    From: $50.00 / month

Kachina, a Wild American Mustang, arrived at the sanctuary on May 10, 2020. She was born in 2010 in the Pryor Mountains of Montana and is the daughter of Baja and Washakie, two of the most famous and beloved horses in that iconic herd. In 2012, when Kachina was two, she was bait-trapped and captured by the Bureau of Land Management. As is often the sad fate for so many wild horses who lose their families and freedom when captured, Kachina was shuffled from home to home, none of which were good situations. Ginger Kathrens, the founder and executive director of the Cloud Foundation, became aware of Kachina’s circumstances and expedited her rescue in October of 2019. Kachina was shipped to Colorado where she was fostered at the ranch of Dr. Lisa Jacobson, a renowned equine veterinarian. It was hoped that she could be adopted, but was soon determined that Kachina was not a good candidate as she did not like being ridden or trained. What she needed was to be retired in a sanctuary. When we heard her story, we offered her a forever home. Kachina is an extremely kind mare and took to sanctuary life as soon as she got here. She spends her day with Hayden, another Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang in the area we call “Born to be Wild.”

Kachina is proudly sponsored by supporters from Richmond, Massachusetts; Williamstown, Massachusetts; Ghent, New York; Mechanicville, New York; Queensbury, New York and Shelburne, Vermont. She is also supported by a corporate sponsor from Albany, New York.

    King

    From: $50.00 / month

King is a stunning Black Percheron Draft born in 2002. He served this country for 16 years as a member of the U.S. Army’s Caisson Platoon of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as “The Old Guard.” He helped to lead the caskets of fallen military members to their final resting places at Arlington National Cemetery. As a wheel horse, King’s job was to help pull the caisson, or wagon that carried the caskets of U.S. military members who passed away or died in combat, designated to be buried with full military honors. Wheel horses are closest to the caisson and always have a rider on their backs. In addition to his missions in funerals and military ceremonies, King was so calm and dependable that he was used to help train the next generation of Caisson Horses. He was released to Equine Advocates for his permanent retirement on July 16, 2023.

King is proudly sponsored by supporters from Hamden, Connecticut; West Haven, Connecticut; Seminole, Florida; East Greenbush, New York; Ghent, New York; Hudson, New York; New York, New York; Rensselaer, New York; West Sand Lake, New York; Wynantskill, New York; Clifton, Virginia and Manassas, Virginia.

  • Little Richard

    Little Richard

    From: $50.00 / month

Little Richard is a Miniature Mule born in June of 2021. He was placed under our care in December of 2024, along with his best friend, a Miniature Horse named Sir Paul. Little Richard is cute beyond words and is the first Miniature Mule to come to the sanctuary. He was feral when he first arrived, a common situation among many of our other residents. Thankfully, whenever we have a difficult equine who has not received much handling or was mishandled or abused, we can take our time and work with that animal at his or her own pace. There is never a rush or a timeline. It’s a sad fact that equines who are hard to handle often end up falling through the cracks because people grow impatient or frustrated when trying to work with them. This is one of the main reasons we have taken in equines over the years who have had this behavioral issue. As we do not have an exact birthdate for Little Richard, we celebrate his birthday on June 17th in honor of Animal Rights Awareness Week.

Little Richard is proudly sponsored by supporters from Southampton, New Jersey; Averill Park, New York; Ballston Spa, New York; Merrick, New York; Queensbury, New York and Valatie, New York.

  • Mama Cass

    Mama Cass

    From: $50.00 / month

Mama Cass is a Belgian Draft whose estimated birth year is 2003. She and a group of other horses had been seized by police in 2022 during a raid on a private farm in Vermont. These horses were reportedly part of a commercial riding business. Sadly, when the owner passed away from an illness, the horses were left in less capable hands, and their care was severely compromised. The authorities intervened when formal complaints were filed about the poor condition of the horses. Several local rescue groups in Vermont and Maine became involved and voluntarily took over responsibility for them. Mama Cass was placed in a temporary foster home where she received good treatment under the care of Dorset Equine Rescue, one of the rescue groups involved. We learned about her story and need for a permanent home while collaborating with that organization and others on a multi-horse rescue in Pennsylvania in January of 2023.

Mama Cass was transported to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY, for examination and evaluation before being brought to Equine Advocates. Radiographs revealed that she had arthritic changes in all four pasterns and in her front coffin joints, which, according to her examining veterinarian, are not uncommon in Draft Horses. She was put on a series of six treatments of Adequan and daily medication to help manage her arthritis going forward. An equine dentist also treated her teeth while she was in the hospital.

Mama Cass arrived at Equine Advocates on February 15, 2023. As is our custom, whenever we do not know a horse’s exact birthday, we use a significant date, such as the day of rescue or arrival at the sanctuary, as a way to mark and celebrate that animal’s “Re-Birth-Day.” So, February 15th it is! One of the wonderful things we quickly learned about Mama Cass after her arrival here was that her bright personality and curious nature were as enormous as her size!

Mama Cass is proudly sponsored by supporters from Portage, Michigan; Cohoes, New York; Loudonville, New York and Wynantskill, New York.

Mannie is a Miniature Horse estimated to have been born in 1993. He was rescued from an abusive situation along with another Miniature Horse named Sonya in 2002. That was two years before we established our sanctuary, so we placed them in an adoptive home at that time. They were ultimately returned to Equine Advocates and came to the sanctuary on January 10, 2011. Sadly, Sonya passed away on February 27, 2017.

  • Marlene

    Marlene

    From: $50.00 / month

Marlene is a gorgeous sorrel Molly Mule who was used by the Amish for heavy farmwork before being dumped at a Pennsylvania slaughter auction when she outlived her usefulness. She had an oozing “bad right eye” that was the source of obvious discomfort for her before her rescue in January 2026. She was transported from the auction to a quarantine facility for 30 days. This is a critically important safety measure for any equine who could have been exposed to horses with contagious diseases, including places like the low-end auction where Marlene had been dumped. From there, she was shipped to Cornell University Hospital for Animals for evaluation and treatment before coming to the sanctuary. At the hospital, she was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of her right eye, a common form of cancer in horses that typically affects older animals. To remove the large cancerous tumor and prevent it from spreading, Dr. Kelly Knickelbein performed an Equine Exenteration, “… in which the eye and its associated secretory tissues as well as all the tissues behind the eye were removed to the level of the orbital bones…” According to Dr. Knickelbein, Marlene was a wonderful patient and got through her recovery period at the hospital well.

Sadly, Marlene was also found to be unsound with joint issues affecting all four legs. These problems are common in many of our rescued horses and mules who had been used by Amish and Mennonite farmers for work and transportation. In Marlene’s case, it seemed clear that she was disposed of at auction because she was too lame and unsound to work anymore.

Marlene arrived at the sanctuary on March 25, 2026.  At the hospital, her year of birth was estimated to be around 2010. Consequently, we will celebrate her Re-Birth-Day every year on March 25th, the day she began her new life with us at the sanctuary.

Marlene is proudly sponsored by supporters from Canandaigua, New York; New York, New York and Clarksburg, West Virginia.

    From: $50.00 / month

Melanie, a Belgian Draft, was born in the spring of 2004 to PMU (Pregnant Mares’ Urine) mare Peggy, who was in foal at the time of her rescue. She is absolutely gorgeous and has the most beautiful, flowing mane. The sad fact is that she would probably not be alive today had Peggy not been rescued. Female offspring of PMU mares are either fattened and sent to feedlots for slaughter or used to replace used-up mares on the PMU lines, which is nothing more than a long route to the slaughterhouse. Melanie shares her pasture with Peggy, another rescued PMU mare named Annie, and a rescued Philadelphia Carriage Horse named Mark in the area we call “Field of Dreams.”
