• Sir Paul

    Sir Paul

    From: $50.00 / month

Sir Paul is a Miniature Horse born in 2011. He was placed under our care in December of 2024, along with his stablemate Little Richard, a Miniature Mule. Sir Paul is one of many miniature equines who have come to the sanctuary over the years. In his particular case, it was important not to separate him from Little Richard, who was feral and needed a lot of special handling. The two are best friends, and we felt keeping them together as they adjusted to sanctuary life benefited them both. In general, miniatures are very popular. Many people think of them as baby animals due to their small sizes and irresistible cuteness. However, that is not enough to protect them from abuse or ending up at low-end auctions. Rescuing a miniature equine or adopting one from organizations with adoption programs can be extremely rewarding if you have the proper facilities and experience to provide them with a loving home.

Sir Paul is a Blue Roan and is just beautiful to look at, and is completely adorable. As we do not know his date of birth, we will celebrate his birthday on March 1st in honor of National Horse Protection Day.

Sir Paul is proudly sponsored by supporters from Lenox, Massachusetts; South Egremont, Massachusetts; Valatie, New York and Wynantskill, New York.

    Sly

    From: $50.00 / month

Sly was captured by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on January 13, 2024, as part of the largest roundup of that year. It took place in the Black Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) located in the extreme northwestern part of Arizona. During this time, more than 1100 Wild Burros were captured over 17 days. One of the biggest threats to Wild Burros is human encroachment on their territory. Urban development, increasing human populations, ranching, and other factors have led to significant losses to their natural habitats, directly affecting their ability to find adequate food and water sources. This encroachment has also resulted in some Burros being hit and killed by vehicles. Experts recommend the establishment of Wildlife Corridors (connecting habitats) as one of the ways to help protect their populations and ensure their survival.

Sly arrived at Equine Advocates on June 13, 2025. His estimated birth year is 2017. Since we do not know the day he was born, we will celebrate his Re-Birth-Day on June 13th, the day he and three other Wild Burros arrived at our sanctuary. Sly can most easily be recognized by a part of his left ear that is missing, most likely the result of a past injury or bite.

Sly is proudly sponsored by supporters from Laguna Beach, California; Laurel, Maryland and Mount Airy, North Carolina.

  • Sophie

    Sophie

    From: $50.00 / month

Sophie is a striking Bay Mare born in 2008. She is a Dutch Harness Horse, a Warmblood breed originally developed in the Netherlands for driving. Despite her refined breeding, Sophie’s life was hardly a glamorous one. For years, she was used and driven hard by the Amish as a Buggy Horse. By the time she was fourteen, she had sustained several serious injuries including bowed tendons in both front legs. As she was no longer physically able to work, she was dumped at a low-end Pennsylvania meat auction and sold for slaughter. Miraculously, as she was in a kill pen scheduled to be loaded onto a trailer to a Mexican slaughterhouse, she was rescued by our good friend Gerda Silver of Gerda’s Equine Rescue. Gerda sent Sophie to Horses With Hope, an organization that helps to train rescued equines for riding. However, x-rays showed that Sophie had a spinal deformity and other physical problems that prevented her from having a rider on her back.

Sophie needed to be retired at a sanctuary. As they say, “Timing is everything!” When Gerda contacted us about Sophie, it just so happened that we had a gelding at the sanctuary who needed a mare as a companion as he did not get along with other geldings. On April 12, 2024, Sophie arrived at Equine Advocates and was introduced to Randy, an equine veteran who was retired here from the U.S. Army after serving as a Military Working Horse with the Caisson Platoon. We hoped that they would bond, and they did! It was absolutely the best possible situation for both of these wonderful horses.

As we do not know Sophie’s exact date of birth, we will celebrate her birthday each year on April 12, the day she arrived at Equine Advocates.

Sophie is proudly sponsored by supporters from Louisville, Kentucky; Rensselaer, New York; Valatie, New York; Cottage Grove, Oregon and Houston, Texas.

    Suzie

    From: $50.00 / month

Suzie, a Percheron/Appaloosa Cross, was born on April 25, 2004, to Bernadette, who was in foal at the time of her rescue from a Canadian PMU (Pregnant Mares’ Urine) factory farm. Suzie, her pasture mate Lily, and their dams were the first horses to arrive at the sanctuary after it was established on June 1, 2004.

As a foal, Suzie was black, but she turned white like her mother as she grew up. Sadly, Bernadette passed away in 2018. Suzie is a lovable, friendly, and mischievous mare who loves to spend time with Lily and their other pasture mate, Gracie.

Suzie is proudly sponsored by supporters from Sacramento, California; Acra, New York; Hudson, New York; New York, New York and Saratoga Springs, NY.

  • Swiftie

    Swiftie

    From: $50.00 / month

Swiftie, born on April 15, 2010, is a Registered Thoroughbred Mare with one of the most unique and special backgrounds of any equine at the sanctuary.

She was one of the last foals born to Press Exclusive, a Kentucky-bred racehorse whose dramatic rescue from slaughter in Canada in 2012 went viral. Press Exclusive arrived at Equine Advocates the following year for permanent retirement. Mindy Lovell, who runs Transitions Thoroughbreds in Ontario and rescued Press Exclusive, informed us about one of her foals – a Canadian-bred filly named “X Squared” who was racing at Woodbine. Equine Advocates President Susan Wagner spoke with Mindy about following her career and doing everything possible to prevent her from ending up on a slaughter truck like her mom. Mindy discovered that in 2018, X Squared had been sold to someone in Texas and was shipped to the U.S. to race. Susan contacted that person to ask if there came a time when X Squared needed a forever home, we would like to retire her at the sanctuary. Another six years passed, and in June of 2024, Susan received an unexpected call asking if she was still interested in giving X Squared a home. She said “yes,” and began arranging to transport the mare from the southern U.S. to New York State. With X Squared’s new life came a new, musically inspired name – Swiftie!

She arrived at Cornell University Hospital for Animals on July 10, 2024, for a thorough check-up and evaluation, and arrived at the sanctuary on July 27, 2024. Swiftie is a large and gorgeous bay mare with an expressive face and kind disposition. What an amazing journey this has been for her and us! Sadly, Press Exclusive passed away on December 16, 2024, but not before reuniting with one of her foals.

Swiftie is proudly sponsored by supporters from San Gabriel, California; Upland, California; Davie, Florida; Port Huron, Michigan; Beacon, New York; Canandaigua, New York; Clifton Park, NY; Glenmont, New York and South Salem, New York.

  • Sylvia

    Sylvia

    From: $50.00 / month

Sylvia, we believe, is an Arabian/Quarter Horse Cross Mare born around 2010. In September of 2018, she was standing in the Kaufman Kill Pens in Kaufman, Texas, and was less than 24 hours from being shipped to Mexico for slaughter. A friend of Equine Advocates found her photo online among equines bound for slaughter. Because no one stepped up to bail her out, we did, and with the help of a good friend with great connections, we located a farm in Louisiana where she could be quarantined.

Sylvia remained at that facility for 40 days during which time she was examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, wormed, and had her feet trimmed and teeth floated. In early November, she traveled to New York and was sent to a foster home where she stayed until we had the room to accommodate her. She arrived at the sanctuary on May 21, 2019. We named her Sylvia because she looked like a silver horse in the first photo we saw of her. Sylvia is a gem!

    Tim

    From: $50.00 / month

Tim, formerly “Timothy Murphy,” is a Registered Thoroughbred Gelding born on April 14, 1999. He is a grandson of Conquistador Cielo and 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. After his racing career was over, he was retrained and sent to join a State University Equine Studies Program. The school was about to sell him and two other Thoroughbred geldings, Denny and Monty, at auction because they had outlived their usefulness. Equine Advocates found out about their story and purchased them privately from the school on December 5, 2010. Learning institutions that use horses in their equine programs should teach responsible horse guardianship and not just dispose of their horses and put their lives at risk when they are no longer in those programs. Tim now spends his days with other Thoroughbreds, including Denny, in a section of the sanctuary we call “A Few Good Men.”

Tim is proudly sponsored by supporters from Boston, Massachusetts; Washington, Pennsylvania and Houston, Texas.

    Tina

    From: $50.00 / month

Tina, a mixed-breed born in June of 2013, had a rough start. Her mother passed away while giving birth to her. As a result, Tina did not receive the vitally important colostrum through her mother’s milk within the first 72 hours of being born to help build her immune system. This resulted in her being much smaller than she should be. She was rescued by a great friend of the organization who learned through her veterinarian that Tina was also half-blind in her left eye, due to an injury she sustained as a foal. She was not a horse eligible for adoption, so we took her into our sanctuary program in 2014. In 2021, her left eye was surgically removed. She is beyond adorable, and we are so pleased to have her here. Tina hangs out with her donkey friend, Pensacola Pete, in our “Odd Couple” pasture!

Tina is proudly sponsored by supporters from Emmett, Idaho; Lenox, Massachusetts; Albany, New York; Glenmont, New York; Saratoga Springs, New York and Schodack, New York.

  • Tom Petty

    Tom Petty

    From: $50.00 / month

Tom Petty is an unraced Registered Thoroughbred Gelding born in New York on April 6, 2021. He was surrendered to us by a trainer at the request of two Thoroughbred aftercare organizations after he was diagnosed with chronic lameness issues. Since he did not have a name, we named him after the late, great rock musician who kindly added his name to a petition calling for a national horse slaughter ban. We presented that petition to the office of then-Vice President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C. in 2016.

When we learned that “young Tom” needed to go to a sanctuary, we felt we had a good spot for him in a large pasture occupied by four geldings with one extra stall. He arrived at Equine Advocates on March 1, 2024. Within a few days, we began the introduction process gradually, where the horses met over a fence that separated two sections of that pasture. In this case, the intro only took a couple of weeks as Tom was eager to get to know the other geldings and become part of the herd. They were interested in getting to know him as well. Tom is as handsome as he is kind. He is also extremely frisky and loves to run and play. In other words, Tom Petty rocks!

Tom Petty is proudly sponsored by supporters from Waterford, Connecticut; Cape Coral, Florida; Averill Park, New York; Valatie, New York and Green Bay, Wisconsin.

    Tyler

    From: $50.00 / month

Tyler is a Grey Quarter Horse Gelding born on January 14, 2002. For nine years, he led a fascinating life as a Military Working Horse with the U.S. Army’s Caisson Platoon of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as “The Old Guard.” His former job in helping to lead the caskets of members of the U.S. Military who have passed away or died in combat to their final resting places at Arlington National Cemetery has provided comfort and lasting memories for grieving military families. Tyler performed many important duties with the Caisson Platoon. He was always ridden and performed as a lead horse (the front pair in the funeral procession), as a swing horse (the middle pair in the funeral procession), and as a section horse (the horse that is ridden and not connected to the wagon, positioned directly next to the lead horses).

We are extremely honored to provide Tyler with a permanent retirement home as he enters this new stage of life after performing so many years of loyal service to this country as a Caisson Horse. He arrived at the sanctuary on January 18, 2021.

    Vicky

    From: $50.00 / month

Vicky is a Registered Thoroughbred Mare who raced under the name “Lady Flicker.” She was born on May 15, 2006, in Oklahoma. Vicky did not win a lot of money as a racehorse, so her last owner decided to breed her. After giving birth to at least one foal, she had trouble getting pregnant again, which is how we first heard about her situation. Vicky was rescued in 2018 and was sent to a foster home until we had the room to accommodate her. She arrived at the sanctuary on May 21, 2019. Vicky is a gentle and striking chestnut mare who deserves a forever home where her life is not reduced to being passed from one owner to the next – a situation which sadly becomes the fate of so many equines who are bred for one purpose, only to end up in jeopardy when they can no longer perform or fulfill certain expectations.

Vicky is proudly sponsored by supporters from Granby, Connecticut; Hudson, New York; Slingerlands, New York; Houston, Texas and Draper, Utah.

  • Vince

    Vince

    From: $50.00 / month

Vince is a Grey Appaloosa Gelding whose estimated birth year is 2000. When first looking at him, it’s obvious the tips of his ears are missing and consequently are much shorter than those of a normal horse. Given that both ears are similarly affected, his veterinarians suspect they may have been damaged due to frostbite and that the injuries appear to be old ones. We first heard about Vince during the fall of 2023 when we were contacted about a cruelty case involving him and two mares in upstate New York. One of the mares, Perla, was surrendered to us by the owner on November 20, 2023. We shipped her directly to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY. Vince and the other mare, Bea, were seized by State Troopers two days later at which time we were asked to assume their care, which we did. We immediately sent them to the same equine hospital for evaluation and treatment. After more than three weeks in the hospital, all three were released on December 13, 2023. They were shipped directly to the sanctuary where they continued their respective recoveries. Exactly two months later, Vince and Bea were also surrendered to us by that same owner after he was charged with animal cruelty. Vince shares a two-horse barn situated in a huge pasture with his longtime friend, Perla. (Bea, who has special needs, lives in another part of the sanctuary.) Vince is extremely friendly, outgoing, and beyond adorable. He seems to be very happy and content with his new life and especially loves to take off and run across the pasture with his friend.

Vince is proudly sponsored by supporters from Loudonville, New York; Palenville, New York; Wynantskill, New York and Burlington, North Carolina.
