• Pepper

    Pepper

Pepper, a gorgeous Mule born around 1992, was purchased by Equine Advocates at an Amish dispersal sale in 1999. She had been adopted when first rescued, but came back to us in 2010. This happened with every equine we adopted out in the early years of our organization before we had a place of our own. Thankfully, that situation changed in 2004 when we established our sanctuary in Chatham, New York. Since then, every animal we rescue remains with us for life.

Pepper resides in a section of the sanctuary we call “Mule Town” with two other mules and a former Amish buggy horse.

Pepper is proudly sponsored in full by a supporter from Sands Point, New York.

    Perla

    From: $50.00 / month

Perla is a Registered Grey Standardbred Mare who once raced under the name “Ms. Bellagio.” She was born on June 14, 1997. During the fall of 2023, we were contacted about a cruelty case concerning three horses in upstate New York and Perla was one of them. The owner voluntarily surrendered her to us on November 20, 2023, and at the request of the State Police, we assumed the care of the other two. We immediately sent Perla to a local equine hospital where she was evaluated and treated for 24 days before coming to the sanctuary. Since arriving here on December 13, 2023, Perla has taken to sanctuary life. She loves being turned out in the pasture where she gets to run and play with her longtime friend Vince, a Grey Appaloosa Gelding who was also one of the horses involved in that case. He and another mare, Bea, were both surrendered to us by the same owner on February 13, 2024. Perla really enjoys hanging out in her stall which she can do at will and then go back outside whenever she pleases. She is a lovely mare to be around and has a very sweet and kind disposition. She also enjoys making the rounds with Vince each day and visiting with their equine neighbors. They have access to a huge pasture and have alternate turnout times with the other horses who live there. Perla loves to eat, be groomed, and receive lots of love and attention.

Perla is proudly sponsored by supporters from Gardnerville, Nevada; Valatie, New York and Burlington, North Carolina.

  • Philip Seymour

    Philip Seymour

    From: $50.00 / month

Philip Seymour is a Dark Bay Registered Thoroughbred Gelding who had raced eleven times under the name of “Garitoff.” He was born in Kentucky on March 30, 2019. We don’t know what happened to him from the time he ran his last race in 2023 until October 8, 2025, when we took over his care. He was malnourished and had a serious injury to his front right leg that required immediate medical attention. We do not know how or when he sustained that injury, only that he had ended up with a horse dealer in that condition and needed to be rescued. When we were contacted about his situation, knowing there was the possibility that he could have been shipped to a low-end auction, we moved quickly. We arranged for a hauler to pick him up and transport him directly to Cornell University Hospital for Animals in Ithaca, NY. As soon as he arrived, veterinarians began running tests and working on his injured leg. The wound was open and very large. It was determined that he needed to undergo skin graft surgery, which entailed taking many small pieces of skin from his neck and transplanting them directly into the leg wound to promote new skin growth. The operation was a success! Philip spent 22 days in the hospital and arrived at the sanctuary on October 29, 2025.

As of spring 2026, Philip is still recovering. We plan to introduce him to a herd of four Thoroughbred Geldings once he’s healed.

Philip is proudly sponsored by supporters from Prescott Valley, Arizona; Lenox, Massachusetts; Pittsfield, Massachusetts; Sandwich, Massachusetts; Bellerose, New York; Hudson, New York; Ithaca, New York and Yorktown Heights, New York.

Plato, born May 16, 2000, is a Registered Thoroughbred formerly known as “Platitude” who had a consistent record on the New York racing circuit. He sustained several serious injuries, and his career ended when he cracked his right knee during a race. In 2005, Equine Advocates took him to our sanctuary, had him gelded, and allowed him to recuperate from his injuries in a stall for several months. Now he is pasture sound and will never be ridden again. Plato lives with other Thoroughbreds in a section of the sanctuary we call “A Few Good Men.”

    Randy

Randy is a Dark Bay Percheron Cross Gelding born on May 20, 2001. He served this country faithfully for 12 years in the U.S. Army’s Caisson Platoon of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as “The Old Guard.” He helped lead the caskets of fallen military members to their final resting places at Arlington National Cemetery. He performed in the lead (the front pair in the funeral procession) and swing (the middle pair in the funeral procession) positions.

Randy arrived at the sanctuary on April 24, 2023, following a brief stay at Cornell University Hospital for Animals, where he was examined and evaluated. We join countless other Americans in thanking this sweet-tempered former Military Working Horse for his service and are delighted to provide him with a forever retirement home here at the sanctuary.

    Rocket Man

    From: $50.00 / month

Rocket Man is a Miniature Appaloosa born in 2009. He arrived at the sanctuary in May of 2012 after we learned that he was an intact male (stallion) living in a field with full-size mares – a very dangerous situation where he could have been seriously injured. He had apparent soundness issues, and we immediately sent him to an equine hospital, where he was gelded and had surgery on his left hind limb. Thankfully, he is now pasture sound!

Rocket Man is proudly sponsored by supporters from Hudson, New York; Queensbury, New York and Rockingham, Virginia, as well as by a corporate sponsor from Albany, New York. He’s also sponsored by Radio Woodstock 100.1 WDST.

    From: $50.00 / month

Rose, formerly “Roses for Tara,” is a Registered Thoroughbred Mare born in Pennsylvania on February 27, 2007. She raced five times before being retired. At some point, Rose ended up with someone who tried to retrain her for a riding career. Unfortunately, this person did not have the ability to properly reeducate an ex-racer. Because of this, Rose was going to be sent off to auction. We were able to intervene on Rose’s behalf and she arrived at Equine Advocates on December 15, 2017. She is an extremely sweet and kind mare who enjoys being doted on and loved.

Rose is proudly sponsored by supporters from Scottsdale, Arizona; West Haven, Connecticut; Skokie, Illinois; Lenox, Massachusetts; Bogota, New Jersey; Kinderhook, New York; Houston, Texas and Woodinville, Washington.

  • Sir Paul

    Sir Paul

    From: $50.00 / month

Sir Paul is a Miniature Horse born in 2011. He was placed under our care in December of 2024, along with his stablemate Little Richard, a Miniature Mule. Sir Paul is one of many miniature equines who have come to the sanctuary over the years. In his particular case, it was important not to separate him from Little Richard, who was feral and needed a lot of special handling. The two are best friends, and we felt keeping them together as they adjusted to sanctuary life benefited them both. In general, miniatures are very popular. Many people think of them as baby animals due to their small sizes and irresistible cuteness. However, that is not enough to protect them from abuse or ending up at low-end auctions. Rescuing a miniature equine or adopting one from organizations with adoption programs can be extremely rewarding if you have the proper facilities and experience to provide them with a loving home.

Sir Paul is a Blue Roan and is just beautiful to look at, and is completely adorable. As we do not know his date of birth, we will celebrate his birthday on March 1st in honor of National Horse Protection Day.

Sir Paul is proudly sponsored by supporters from Lenox, Massachusetts; South Egremont, Massachusetts; Valatie, New York and Wynantskill, New York.

  • Sly

    Sly

    From: $50.00 / month

Sly was captured by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on January 13, 2024, as part of the largest roundup of that year. It took place in the Black Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) located in the extreme northwestern part of Arizona. During this time, more than 1100 Wild Burros were captured over 17 days. One of the biggest threats to Wild Burros is human encroachment on their territory. Urban development, increasing human populations, ranching, and other factors have led to significant losses to their natural habitats, directly affecting their ability to find adequate food and water sources. This encroachment has also resulted in some Burros being hit and killed by vehicles. Experts recommend the establishment of Wildlife Corridors (connecting habitats) as one of the ways to help protect their populations and ensure their survival.

Sly arrived at Equine Advocates on June 13, 2025. His estimated birth year is 2017. Since we do not know the day he was born, we will celebrate his Re-Birth-Day on June 13th, the day he and three other Wild Burros arrived at our sanctuary. Sly can most easily be recognized by a part of his left ear that is missing, most likely the result of a past injury or bite.

Sly is proudly sponsored by supporters from Laguna Beach, California; Laurel, Maryland and Mount Airy, North Carolina.

  • Sophie

    Sophie

    From: $50.00 / month

Sophie is a striking Bay Mare born in 2008. She is a Dutch Harness Horse, a Warmblood breed originally developed in the Netherlands for driving. Despite her refined breeding, Sophie’s life was hardly a glamorous one. For years, she was used and driven hard by the Amish as a Buggy Horse. By the time she was fourteen, she had sustained several serious injuries including bowed tendons in both front legs. As she was no longer physically able to work, she was dumped at a low-end Pennsylvania meat auction and sold for slaughter. Miraculously, as she was in a kill pen scheduled to be loaded onto a trailer to a Mexican slaughterhouse, she was rescued by our good friend Gerda Silver of Gerda’s Equine Rescue. Gerda sent Sophie to Horses With Hope, an organization that helps to train rescued equines for riding. However, x-rays showed that Sophie had a spinal deformity and other physical problems that prevented her from having a rider on her back.

Sophie needed to be retired at a sanctuary. As they say, “Timing is everything!” When Gerda contacted us about Sophie, it just so happened that we had a gelding at the sanctuary who needed a mare as a companion as he did not get along with other geldings. On April 12, 2024, Sophie arrived at Equine Advocates and was introduced to Randy, an equine veteran who was retired here from the U.S. Army after serving as a Military Working Horse with the Caisson Platoon. We hoped that they would bond, and they did! It was absolutely the best possible situation for both of these wonderful horses.

As we do not know Sophie’s exact date of birth, we will celebrate her birthday each year on April 12, the day she arrived at Equine Advocates.

Sophie is proudly sponsored by supporters from Louisville, Kentucky; Rensselaer, New York; Valatie, New York; Cottage Grove, Oregon and Houston, Texas.

Suzie, a Percheron/Appaloosa Cross, was born on April 25, 2004, to Bernadette, who was in foal at the time of her rescue from a Canadian PMU (Pregnant Mares’ Urine) factory farm. Suzie, her pasture mate Lily, and their dams were the first horses to arrive at the sanctuary after it was established on June 1, 2004.

As a foal, Suzie was black, but she turned white like her mother as she grew up. Sadly, Bernadette passed away in 2018. Suzie is a lovable, friendly, and mischievous mare who loves to spend time with Lily and their other pasture mate, Gracie.
