Times Union: New York remains thoroughfare for horses trucked to Canadian slaughterhouse

The Times Union, which is the largest newspaper servicing the Capital District in New York State and beyond, recently began featuring a series of articles about abuses in the horse industry. Equine Advocates President Susan Wagner was quoted in its most recent article on the topic, which focuses on the extremely unpopular and un-American practice of horse slaughter, the banning of which has been blocked for decades by special interests in Big Ag and Big Oil.

Those of us who have been involved with this issue since the early 1990s have been witnesses to this maze of corruption in the horse industry. That said, one really needs to connect the dots as the proponents of horse slaughter, while small but powerful, also include some unlikely “welfare” groups and individuals behind the implementation of the disastrous governmental policy to “manage” wild horses and burros known as “The Path Forward,” which we believe has stood in the way of banning the slaughter of all equines in this country.
