    Amos

    From: $50.00 / month

Amos, a Percheron Draft, served this country as a Military Working Horse for 14 years with the U.S. Army’s Caisson Platoon of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as “The Old Guard.” Because of his sheer size and strength, he almost exclusively served as a wheel horse who pulled the caisson, or wagon carrying the caskets of fallen military members to their final resting places at Arlington National Cemetery. However, because Amos was also such a good riding horse, he occasionally would serve as a section horse in military funeral processions. Section horses are ridden and positioned directly next to the lead horses, but not connected to the caisson.

During his years of service, Amos performed in many military funerals and other official ceremonies, including the funeral of General Colin Powell in 2021. The Caisson Platoon released Amos from service on November 1, 2023. He was first shipped to Cornell University Hospital for Animals, where he underwent a health and wellness exam before coming to the sanctuary. Amos was born in 2004, but we do not know his exact date of birth. Consequently, we will celebrate his birthday every year on November 9th, the day he arrived at Equine Advocates. Amos is a handsome grey gelding with a kind and playful disposition. We are honored to provide this equine veteran with a well-deserved retirement where he will be cared for and doted on for the rest of his life.

Amos is proudly sponsored by supporters from Fallbrook, California; West Haven, Connecticut; Brooklyn, New York; Hudson, New York; Kinderhook, New York; Bushkill, Pennsylvania; Clifton, Virginia and Yakima, Washington.

    Annie

    From: $50.00 / month

Annie, born around 2001, is a Belgian Draft branded with #157 (the same as Peggy) and was the youngest of 46 Canadian PMU (Pregnant Mares’ Urine) mares Equine Advocates rescued between October 2003 and March 2004. For that reason, she does not seem to have as many physical and emotional scars as most of the other mares rescued during those six months. She gave birth to a colt named Connor in the spring of 2004. They were adopted out, but both horses came back to us in 2008. Annie spends her days with her friends in the area we call “Field of Dreams.”

    Arnold

    From: $50.00 / month

Arnold is a Registered Thoroughbred who was born on April 7, 2001, and once raced under the name “Cluster Bomb.” He was one of three emaciated Thoroughbreds rescued from a breeding farm in 2007 by Equine Advocates. All three horses were in such poor condition that they had to be treated at an equine hospital for over 30 days. The story of their rescue was featured in an article by New York Times reporter Joe Drape in April of 2009. The article exposed wide-scale abuse and neglect, and the breeder was later convicted and served time in jail. Today, Arnold is healthy and happily spends his days in the company of other Thoroughbreds.

Arnold is proudly sponsored by supporters from Bronx, New York; New York, New York and Green Bay, Wisconsin.

    From: $50.00 / month

Bea is a Bay Quarter Horse Mare whose estimated birth year is 1995. She arrived at Equine Advocates on December 13, 2023, after spending more than three weeks at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY. Bea was one of three horses embroiled in a cruelty case in upstate New York. She was seized by State Troopers on November 22, 2023, along with Vince who also lives at the sanctuary. The third horse, Perla, had already been surrendered to us by her owner on November 20, 2023, but Bea and Vince were not surrendered to us until February 13, 2024.

Bea is extremely cute and funny and makes everyone laugh. She is quite the character who always lets you know if there is something she wants or needs, especially when food is involved.

    Beau

    From: $50.00 / month

Beau is an Unregistered Thoroughbred born in 2003. He came to Equine Advocates in 2008, along with his sire, Clive, and another Thoroughbred, Marty, after their former owner was charged with animal cruelty and neglect. Sadly, Clive and Marty have since passed away. Beau is a chronic cribber, most likely due to his poor treatment and confinement by his former owner. Cribbing is a neurotic behavior that involves a horse grasping a solid object, such as the stall door or fence rail, with his or her teeth, then arching their neck and contracting the lower neck muscles to retract the larynx. This behavior can lead to health problems if left unchecked. Because of this behavior, Beau now wears a cribbing collar. Despite his physical and emotional baggage, he is very happy at the sanctuary.

Beau is proudly sponsored by supporters from Sacramento, California; Westfield, New Jersey; Ghent, New York; Hoosick Falls, New York and Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

  • Blue

    Blue

    From: $50.00 / month

Blue is a Black Pony born on April 21, 2004. He had been used as a Camp Horse in Vermont, but the camp owner decided to get rid of him because he was not a good candidate for being ridden “English.” Instead of trying to find him a safe and kind home, that callous owner dumped him at a slaughter auction in Agawam, Massachusetts. Blue was rescued from that auction 2017. He arrived at our sanctuary on April 24, 2025.

The sad truth is that many Camp Horses and Ponies that children fall in love with during the summer might not be alive the following year. This is often the case with seasonal riding camps that lease their horses from killer buyers and horse dealers to whom the camps return the animals at summer’s end. If they determine that any of those horses have outlived their usefulness or just don’t want them, they will sell them at low-end auctions where many end up being sold for slaughter. This “throw-away” mentality also applies to horses and ponies used at dude ranches, riding academies, riding schools, and other riding establishments where the care is often substandard, and the animals are neglected and overworked. Many are mishandled, ridden without proper and professional oversight, tethered in the hot sun all day without adequate water, and treated inhumanely. Parents need to do their research to make sure that they send their children to reputable riding camps and other places with riding programs that do not dispose of their animals at auction or place them in dangerous situations. At Equine Advocates, we focus on Responsible Horse Guardianship as part of our Humane Education Program, which is so important in preventing horses and other equines from falling through the cracks.

  • Bruce

    Bruce

    From: $50.00 / month

Bruce lost his family and freedom along with more than 1100 Wild Burros when they were rounded up and captured by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The roundup occurred between January 8 and 24, 2024, in the Black Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) of Arizona. This is the largest HMA in that state, spanning 1.1 million acres across public, state, tribal, and private lands. Bruce was captured on January 14 and gelded on July 2 by the BLM that same year. The Cattoor Livestock Roundup Company, contracted by the BLM, used “helicopter drive trapping” to capture the Wild Burros over those 17 days. Wild Horse Education (WHE), one of the organizations that had witnesses at the 2024 Black Mountain roundup, published this observation: “WHE is particularly concerned about ‘capture stress’ as Burros are more susceptible and past roundups have shown high mortality rates after capture. Burros are not horses. That statement applies not only to the outdated way Burros are managed on range (using modeling for horses), but it also applies to capture and how they are fed and handled post-capture.”

Bruce arrived at our sanctuary with three other Wild Burros on June 13th, 2025. He is the largest of the four geldings. According to the BLM, Bruce was born in 2017. As we do not know the exact day the burros were born, we will celebrate their Re-Birth-Days on their arrival date.

Bruce is proudly sponsored by supporters from Bergenfield, New Jersey; Earlton, New York; Ithaca, New York and Mount Airy, North Carolina.
